February 2008 - Ticino parliament wants a more rapid transfer to rail by means of an Alpine Crossing Exchange
The cantonal parliament of Ticino has decided, with only one dissenting vote, to send a cantonal initiative, i.e. a referendum requested by the canton, to Bern, demanding a more rapid transfer of freight traffic from road to rail. Two years after the current debates in the Swiss parliament on the draft legislation for freight traffic, the Alpine Crossing Exchange is to be introduced and the number of transalpine truck journeys is to be reduced to 650,000 by 2012 at the latest.
