TIMES OF JOY
The Alpine Initiative is extremely pleased to announce that it has received a gift from the Swiss Minister of Transport, Moritz Leuenberger – he has given the Alpine Initiative the 5,000 euros prize money from the 2009 European Railway Award, which he received in Brussels. This prize is awarded by the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) and the Association of European Rail Industry (UNIFE).

The Alpine Initiative is even more pleased that Moritz Leuenberger has acknowledged the activities of the Alpine Initiative within Swiss democracy as “necessary and exemplary”. In his speech, he also said the Alpine Initiative, which was adopted by the Swiss people in 1994, was an element of the democratically established mandates thanks to which he received this award. Moreover, he mentioned the Alpine Crossing Exchange, which has been launched by the Alpine Initiative and which Switzerland, the Alpine countries and the EU are currently seeking to implement. By passing the new Freight Traffic Transfer Act in December 2008, the Swiss Parliament has authorized the Swiss Government to negotiate agreements on an Alpine Transit Exchange with other countries.
