Global freight traffic will continue to increase. Low transport costs favour the international sourcing of goods and a division of labour, and thus also promote global freight transport. Increasing truck transport endangers sensitive ecosystems, such as the Alps. The VCÖ fact sheet includes the ACE as one method of regulating freight transport.
